The Highlands Are Full Of Must-Sees. Shame Someone Took One. Before Joana and Brian became Scotland’s most argumentative detective duo, they had to survive a university field trip. October 2010. Joana thought she’d signed up for a photographic trip in the Highlands. Instead, she ends up wedged into a minibus next to Brian, an IT student whose rucksack is mostly filled with crisps and cereal bars. He spends the journey fiddling with an app called Instagram, which no one else had heard of yet. Paired up to document rural village life in sleepy Lochinver, their project derails before it even properly begins. The Auld Lang Syne B&B relies on its star attraction to draw in the tourists: Bonnie, a Highland cow with a fringe that has featured in more holiday snaps than the local loch. But when Bonnie’s famous fringe is butchered, and the 500-kilo mascot vanishes entirely the very next night, the village is thrown into chaos. Joana and Brian find themselves picking through Highland mud and local gossip in search of answers. The suspect list includes a London hotelier with big plans, a grumpy sheep farmer who is handy with anything sharp, and a gang of enterprising local teenagers. The two of them have to put aside their mutual irritation and actually cooperate to solve this case. As it turns out, Joana’s sharp thinking and Brian’s enthusiasm for technology are a rather unexpectedly useful match. Shaggy Business is the prequel to The Highland Mysteries. Discover how Joana and Brian solved their very first case, and realised that despite their differences, they make a rather brilliant team.
